The outside dental appointment coordinator stated the resident was not enrolled for dental care and had only elected podiatry services. The MRD later stated the resident would have needed an external dental clinic of his choice and that an appointment should have been arranged when originally ordered, but she could not explain why it was missed. The DON and NP stated they expected referrals to be followed up timely and that the resident should have been seen by a dentist by then.

CNAs reported that the resident previously had dentures but that they had been lost for a very long time. The DON stated she was not aware the resident’s dentures were missing and acknowledged that the facility’s expectation is to promptly follow up on outside provider recommendations and obtain consent to treat as needed. The facility’s own policy on dental services required written, signed, and dated treatment orders from the dentist to be charted and made part of the medical record and care plan, but the necessary guardian consent for denture fabrication was not obtained, resulting in a delay of several months before new dentures could be made.
